LED Light Bulb Information

Are the LED Bulbs available in different colours?

Yes, there are two main colours available: Warm White and White.

Warm White - this is similar to the warm yellow/orange glow of a traditional halogen light bulb.

White - this is a brighter and more natural light, often referred to as being contemporary or clinical white.

Efficiency & Savings:

A 3W LED Bulb produces the equivalent lumen output as 30W Halogen Bulb, meaning that it costs a lot less to run.

The LED equivalent will use 1/10 of the power of the traditional Halogen bulb, reducing the running cost by 90%.

Annual Savings: The cost of running 6 30W Halogen bulbs for 6 hours per day would be £43.80 per year, where as the cost of running 6 3W LED bulbs for 6 hours a day would be £4.38 - giving an annual saving of £39.42.  This saving it based on a unit price of 12p per kWh.

Why is the Lumen Output important?

Lumens measure the amount of light that is produced by the bulb, whereas the Watts measure the amount of energy required to power the bulb. Therefore it is important to compare bulbs by their lumen output, as some bulbs are more efficient than others and more power does not necessarily result in more light output.

What does Beam Angle relate to?

The beam angle represents the spread of light from the bulb the larger the percentage of the angle, the larger spread of light. While a spread of light may be useful, it is important to remember that the large the spread, the less bright the covered area will be.

Is the driver important?

In one word, YES!

The quality of the driver is will determine the quality of the LED bulb. Many companies will quote that their LED bulbs will last for 50,000, but in reality this will not be the case because of the sub-standard driver that is being used. While the bulb itself may less way beyond 50,000 hours, a poor quality driver will reduce the life-span of the bulb dramatically.

What type of Bulb do I require?

There are a few different types of bulbs for various different fittings.

Below you will see the different bulb types and connectors. It is important to ensure you have the correct connector otherwise the bulb will not work.

Bayonet Fitting

On of the most common bulbs in the UK. The bulb has two lugs on the connector, which clip into the light fitting.

Although the bulb may look similar to the Edison bulb, the key is that the connector is different. The Edison has a screw connector, where as the Bayonet requires a push and twist to fit.

Edison Fitting

Along with the Bayonet fitting, this is one of the most commonly used bulbs in the UK. The bulb has a screw connector, but there are different diameters of the fitting, so it is important to ensure you order the correct size.

Although the bulb may look similar to the Bayonet bulb, the key is that the connector is different. The Bayonet has a lug connector, where as the Edison requires the bulb to be screwed into position.

There are two different connector sizes on the Edison Bulbs, E14 and E27, so you need to ensure that you have the correct size for your light fitting.

MR16 - Down-Light

The MR16 is a popular down-light fitting that is often found in kitchens and lighting rails.

The MR16 has two small pins on the connector, which are a lot smaller compared to the similar GU10 bulb.

GU10 - Down-Light

The GU10 is also a popular down-light fitting that is often used in kitchens.

The GU10 has two larger pins on the connector, which get wider at the ends. Be careful not to confuse this bulb with the MR16 bulb, which has two pins that are a lot smaller compared to the GU10 bulb.
